Chris Bailey

It is with great sadness that Southend Liberal Democrats announce the death of Chris Bailey, who died from natural causes whilst sailing in Scotland on 1st July 2019. Chris was someone for whom the expression 'stalwart' was invented. He joined the Liberal Party in 1965, when he was 16. He has worked continuously and tirelessly for the Liberals and their successors, the Liberal Democrats, since that date. In the 1970s he was Councillor for the then Prittlewell Ward and was Borough Councillor for Leigh Ward for a period in the 1980s.

Chris was leading member of the Party, both locally and nationally, including acting as adviser to the current Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Sir Vince Cable.

Chris will be greatly missed by the whole community.

A service to remember the life of Chris Bailey will be held at Southend Crematorium on Wednesday 24th July at 12pm.

Over the last three weeks our fantastic team of Liberal Democrat candidates have been out and about across the East of England, talking to voters. Marie Goldman was up early one morning to speak to voters at Chelmsford station. She found many former Labour voters say they will back the Liberal Democrats this time.

Perhaps not the one you were thinking of - but the ex-head of the Civil Service Gus O'Donnell is one of a big list of big names from across the political spectrum who are backing the Liberal Democrats tomorrow. Read their endorsements: πŸ”ΆπŸ”Ά

    1. Lord Heseltine, Tory peer

The former Deputy PM endorsed us in the Sunday Times.

    2. Andrew MacKinlay, former Labour MP

Andrew was MP for Thurrock for 18 years and a Labour member for 52. But he endorsed us on Monday, slamming Labour's refusal to oppose this Brexit shambles.

    3. Gus O'Donnell, former civil servant

Gus, former head of the civil service and cross-bench peer, wrote for the Times to endorse us. He was very clear - we're the biggest, strongest party of Remain and if you want to stop Brexit you need to vote Lib Dem.

    4. Julie Girling, independent MEP

Writing for her blog, Julie said that we're the only party with the infrastructure to send MEPs to Brussels who'll make a difference. She agrees - a vote for the Lib Dems is the most effective way to win a People's Vote.

    5. Matthew Parris, former MP and columnist

Speaking on Newsnight, he condemned the Tories' unceremoniously chucking of Michael Heseltine. Then, he endorsed us and urged Remainers to do the same:

    6. Michael Cashman, Labour peer

Lord Cashman's endorsement was succinct, so we'll let him do the talking for us:

I think I've just resigned from the Labour party by declaring that I will support the Liberal Democrats in the European elections.

BONUS: Labour's lead MEP candidate in the South East

We're not sure it was perhaps as deliberate as the ones above, but Labour's lead candidate in the South East had this to say in a hustings - "if you want to stop Brexit, vote with your heart, vote Liberal Democrat"...

Even Labour's own MEP candidates are admitting the truth: if you want to stop Brexit, vote your heart and vote Liberal Democrat this Thursday.

Fracking harms our communities and plunges our planet further into a climate crisis. Lib Dems are fighting to ban it across Europe πŸŒπŸƒ

Throughout our history, the Liberal Democrats have lead the way on green issues. The 1979 Liberal/SDP manifesto called for a "war on waste and pollution" and highlighted "the need to reserve the natural environment for future generations."

Forty years later, our 2019 European manifesto is no less radical. Just last week, Vince Cable announced our commitment to campaign for an EU-wide ban on fracking.

The Lib Dems know that for real change, we need to work together. Without working with our friends across Europe, we have no chance of effectively tackling our climate crisis.

We're the party that can take on the Brexiteers, the populists, the climate science deniers.

That's why we're fighting to stop Brexit. Without a seat at the table, Britain won't be able to push for the radical, large-scale, progressive change the EU needs to embrace if we're going to properly address this climate emergency.

Alongside the fracking ban, we're calling on the EU to:

    • Adopt a net zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050
    • Increase their standards of and investment in energy efficiency
    • Implement an EU-wide action plan on deforestation
    • Take immediate action to tackle the use of plastics
    • So much more… you can read our full manifesto here.

We know it's ambitious. That's why we need the whole EU to pull together - Britain cannot go it alone if we're going to protect our planet for future generations. When we Stop Brexit, we'll remain part of the strongest international team against climate change.

With Lib Dem MEPs in the European Parliament, we'll be able to call for real, meaningful change in EU environmental policy. As well as being the largest Remain party in the country, we're also the party with the strongest record on green issues and solid, radical, evidence-based environmental policy. We're the party that can take on the Brexiteers, the populists, the climate science deniers.

Based on recent polling, LibDems are best placed to gain an extra MEP at the expense of the Brexit party.

If you're a remainer, give your vote to us in the East England to deprive Farage's party of a seat.

Our lead candidate in the East of England Region (which includes Essex) Cllr Dr Barbara Gibson gave the following speech at the Euro Election Harpenden Hustings event on 14th May.

"Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Brexit and stay in the European Union.

We passionately believe that Britain is stronger as part of the European Union and we have led the fight to give the people the final say on Brexit.

We launched our manifesto yesterday on Europe Day. It's made a splash - read more now:

WARNING: there are naughty words ahead. Stray political editors from the Daily Express may find their sensibilities offended!

We launched our EU manifesto yesterday: Bollocks to Brexit. It's as bold as the name suggests - committing us to:

    βœ”οΈŽ A People's Vote
βœ”οΈŽ Defending our fishing rights from being traded away
    βœ”οΈŽ A carbon-neutral EU by 2050

And much, much more. You can read the full manifesto here: The Bollocks to Brexit Manifesto

A greener, safer Britain requires us to stop Brexit.

    Ed Davey MP

The launch event in London was great fun - with popcorn, fab speeches and, most importantly:

    George Osborn βœ”@GeorgeOsborn

Many thanks to @SalBrinton for teaching us all to say Bollocks to Brexit using sign language.

Let's just say it involves two large cupping motions.

This is not the time to turn on our closest allies in Europe

    Jo Swinson MP

Jo Swinson implored: at a time when the tide of populism is great, with Trump in the West and Putin in the East, this is not the time to turn on our closest allies in Europe. She reminded us that we backed a People's Vote long before it was fashionable - and how good it is that people are joining our campaign, from all parties and none.

Last up was Vince. On his 76th birthday (Europe Day no less!) he was unapologetic about the rights we enjoy as EU citizens. Not just our right to work and study abroad, but the rights of those from European countries to come here. We welcome them and value their contributions.

Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Brexit

    Vince Cable MP

He also stressed - it's not about fighting other remain parties. Since the beginning of the year, poll after poll has been telling us that the UK is now a Remain country. We want to stop Brexit and get on with addressing the big issues that face our country. Which is why it's a travesty that Nigel Farage is topping the polls in a national election. A man that has sown division, violence and racial abuse in our country.

But Nigel Farage, Theresa May and Boris Johnson will all take votes for the Brexit party, the Conservatives or Labour as a vote to crash out the EU. There's only one way to send a strong "stop Brexit" message - and that's to vote Liberal Democrat.

Our message is clear - every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote to stop Brexit. We're the biggest, strongest Remain party and have been since we were the first to call for a People's Vote in June 2016.

We want to remain in the EU because it's best for our economy, our public services and our environment. There's no Brexit deal better than our membership of the European Union. Especially not the hard Brexit being pushed by Theresa May and aided by Jeremy Corbyn.

And, frankly, they didn't have videos like this (thanks BBC This Week!):

Our amazing local election results showed that we can win all across the United Kingdom. And now, that momentum's transferring. More and more people are saying they'll vote Lib Dem on the 23rd May to stop Brexit. Say you're with us - pledge your vote today:
