Well, Thursday 2 May came and went in a whirlwind of activity for Southend's Liberal Democrats and, like the rest of the country, Southend showed the way that whirlwind was blowing.

Out with the old and in with the new. In with 703 new Lib Dem councillors countrywide (at the last count) with Southend proudly providing the 3.

At long last Leigh has restored the balance and collegiate work ethic that has been near impossible in the last 4 years, in returning Ashley Thompson, West Leigh for the first time has a Lib Dem councillor in Beth Hooper, who is known to many as hard working and enthusiastic, and Eastwood Park has seen the much needed return of Paul Collins, a man of integrity, respected by all on the Council.

Working with Carole Mulroney and Peter Wexham, leader and deputy leader of the Lib Dems on the Council, they know we will be working in a welcoming atmosphere with enthusiasm and a sense of purpose.

The air in Leigh and Eastwood has certainly lightened in the last week or so with people openly congratulating us in the street and on Facebook and via email. It is something that has been humbling to receive and spurs us all on to work even harder for our area and the Borough.

Obviously we are still only 5 on the Council and we know we will have to work with others to promote our ideas, but we have found it clear in the lead up to the election that that is what people expect us to do. Stick to our principles but work together both on and off the Council to ensure Southend as a Borough moves forward and upward.

There is no sin in working with others and indeed if it had happened in Westminster we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now nationally. There is a spread of talent and experience on the Council that it would be stupid not to tap into and use to the best advantage of the Borough.

So thank you to the people of Leigh, West Leigh and Eastwood Park for your support, encouragement and good wishes and to all those throughout the Borough who voted for our candidates.

"Leigh is a unique and wonderful place to live and we are committed to work for the residents in any way we can to make it even better."

Ashley Thompson and Beth Hooper

"I am delighted by the election result in Eastwood Park and the faith shown in me by the voters. I look forward to working with the residents and the Eastwood Community Association to help make Eastwood and Southend a better place."
