GOOD NEWS for investment and a greener Southend
Southend Liberal Democrats are pleased to announce that Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has agreed a budget that delivers on our key priorities, including:
- A 'game-changing' £50 million over 5 years into upgrading our roads and pavements.
- £3.6 million a year for the most vulnerable in the Borough through the Adult and Children's Social Care budgets.
- An extra £53 million planned investment in new and upgraded council housing in Southend.
- Investment in our town centre, including through the purchase of the Victoria Centre.
- Investment in our Pier - with new British-built, environmentally friendly electric trains coming for this summer.

On the Environment, Carole Mulroney and your other Liberal Democrat councillors are leading on the Council's commitment to increase tree canopy cover across the Borough by planting hundreds more trees, plus thousands of new shrubs, this year. Carole is also spearheading the new Climate Resilience and Urban Greening Strategy, the new Borough Local Plan, and many other strategies around biodiversity and waste recycling. The new budget adds to this by committing to:
- Southend's Green City Action plan, which contains innovative projects for improving the environment and giving us a Pathway to Net Zero Carbon,
- PlastiCity, a project working with our European neighbours in France, Belgium and the Netherlands to increase the amount of plastic that is recycled,
- £1.8 million capital investment for other initiatives to help the environment, including air quality measurement, electric vehicle (EV) projects and solar panels, and
- £3.9 million capital investment for Southend's coastal defences and cliff stabilisation.
Furthermore, your Liberal Democrat Councillors are championing School Streets to make the school run safer for residents, parents and pupils and are progressing with proposals to pilot 20mph zones.
These are all plans that are in the best interests of everyone in Southend and are possible because of the excellent leadership and hard work of your local Liberal Democrat Councillors.
The Southend Council Group, brilliantly led by Carole Mulroney, Southend-on-Sea Borough Cabinet Member for Environment & Planning, is achieving great changes for our town. Please help us to elect more Lib Dem Councillors and to achieve even more by making a donation today.
