Our candidates for the upcoming local elections on 7th May 2020

Katie Kurilecz

Katie Kurilecz

Ward: West Leigh

It is exciting news to introduce Katie Kurilecz as your Liberal Democrat candidate for West Leigh in the local elections this May.

Katie, who grew up in America, but traces her roots to Southend, moved to Westcliff with her husband in 2017, explaining: "We fell in love with Leigh and all the local area has to offer and feel very lucky to be able to buy our first home in this wonderful setting.

"For me, it's also great to reconnect with my grandfather's past. He was born in Southend and was one of the British troops evacuated from Dunkirk, so I think of him every time I see the 'little ship' Endeavour."

As a passionate advocate for others, Katie will be an active voice for Leigh residents and community.

Speaking on why she is running for West Leigh Katie said: "The Lib Dem team are doing fantastic work bringing about real change for Leigh and its residents. I'm particularly impressed with all they are doing on the environment which is so important to protecting people's health and ensuring a future for the next generations.

"As a Councillor for West Leigh, I will aim to work hard to build on this change, ensuring residents' voices are heard and the issues which matter to them are given full consideration."

Joe Higgs

Joe Higgs

Ward: Eastwood Park

Joe said: "I grew up in Eastwood, moving to Southampton for University before travelling to Ukraine, Thailand, Bahrain and South Korea to teach. Throughout my experiences, Eastwood has always been my home and upon returning I was soon reminded why.

"The people of Eastwood are what make our community so special, the kindness and liberal attitudes of the people of Eastwood make me proud of the area that I call home. I am deeply passionate about education, history, human rights, and climate change.

"It is for these reasons that I spent almost six years teaching overseas, and for the same reasons that I have returned. I have been honoured to visit many historical sites throughout the world and also learned from these experiences; knowledge and skills which I intend to apply to inform my actions should I succeed in my pursuit of a position in Southend Council.

"I believe that Councils around the country need more active citizens to represent communities as councillors and I am optimistic about what Southend Council will be able to achieve with a growing contingent of informed, critically minded councillors."

Billy Boulton

Billy Boulton

Ward: Westborough

Local Liberal Democrats have chosen Billy Boulton to continue as their candidate for Westborough ward in the May local elections. Billy lives in Westcliff, and has long links with the Westborough area dating back to the early 1980s.

He said: "I am delighted the local party have chosen me again. Also, a huge thank you to everyone in Westborough who voted Liberal Democrat last year, both for me in the spring and for Nina Stimson in the general election.

"After more than doubling our vote in the general election we hope to increase it once again this year. But whatever the result I promise I will continue to do what I can to improve our community over the coming year."
