Chris says: "I grew up in Southend and attended Milton Hall Junior school and Westcliff High. I work in the City as a software development manager where I lead an international team. I have three children in local schools. I am standing for the Liberal Democrats as I believe in the statement of our values: that the Liberal Democrats exist to build and safeguard a fair, free and open society, in which we seek to balance the fundamental values of liberty, equality and community, and in which no one shall be enslaved by poverty, ignorance or conformity. Chalkwell ward has a diverse community and is a great place to bring up children and I hope to continue and build on the work the current joint administration has done to make it that way.
"I will work as part of the Southend Liberal Democrats team to:
"Support our Communities
We have invested in improving Southend's roads and pavements after years of neglect under previous administrations. We've put £250,000 into the Community Safety team. We've put in place Public Spaces Protection Orders to control anti-social behaviour on Chalkwell Beach. We're upgrading the Council's housing stock and trialling a Selective Licencing Scheme to make sure privately rented accommodation is fit for purpose.
"Protect our Local Environment
Chalkwell has many green spaces and the Liberal Democrats have worked to make Southend greener still with thousands of new trees being planted. We're phasing out industrial weedkiller for greener weed control methods. We're committed to the target of carbon neutrality by 2030. I am a keen cyclist and we have improved safe cycling facilities across Southend and we are looking into improvements to the extensive cycle network.
"Promote our Local Economy
We are investing in the Pier and the seafront to help bring back tourists and grow again as the town and local businesses recover from the pandemic. We've redeveloped the High Street to attract more shoppers to bring cash into the local economy and we've given Southend United permission to build a new stadium."
